Mortdale sits on the ridge between Hurstville and the Georges River, with older brick homes on generous blocks and a heavy canopy of mature trees over the back yards. High Demand Electrical is a Level 2 ASP accredited contractor (Licence 397193C) working across Mortdale — storm make-safe, private pole repair and replacement, and reconnection to the Ausgrid network.

Storm Damage Power Pole Repair in Mortdale
Once a private pole has been damaged, the rest of your supply is under strain. A leaning or split pole pulls on the service line, and that pull carries through the point of attachment into the consumer mains and switchboard — all of it the property owner's responsibility to repair.
Our crews cover Mortdale, Oatley, Penshurst, Peakhurst, Hurstville and Lugarno with emergency power pole service at any hour, immediate make-safe, and complete power pole repair services.
How Urgent Is Your Storm-Damaged Pole?
Why Mortdale Private Poles Fail in Storms
Mortdale occupies the higher ground in the Georges River council area between Hurstville and the river valley, and the blocks here are larger and older than the suburbs closer to the station centres. Established gardens and mature street trees mean canopy sits directly over service lines on a great many properties, and branch strike is by far the most common cause of the damage we attend.
Bigger blocks also mean longer private spans. Where the house sits well back from the street, the run from the private pole to the point of attachment can be considerable, and a long span under wind load or with a limb across it puts serious strain on both ends. The poles carrying those spans are frequently original timber, quietly rotting at the ground line, with corroded cross arms and stay fittings above.
Mortdale is on the Ausgrid network. The numbered poles in the street are Ausgrid's and the network maintains them. A pole standing on your own land, feeding your service line, is a private pole and the owner is responsible for keeping it safe. We settle that question on site before anything else.
Choose Your Situation — See What We Do
What Happens When Your Mortdale Pole Comes Down
- Keep everyone clear — at least 8 metres from any conductor on the ground, and assume every wire is live. Report downed wires to Ausgrid on 13 13 88 first, then call us for the private pole.
- We attend and make safe. The supply is isolated, the pole or its remains are secured, and the immediate hazard is cleared from the yard, driveway and footpath.
- We assess the whole structure — butt below ground line, cross arms, stays, the full span and the point of attachment — and give you a plain answer on straightening versus replacement.
- We carry out the work: cross arm replacement, new service cable, or a full emergency pole replacement on the same visit where we can.
- We reconnect and notify the network. As a Level 2 ASP we handle disconnection, reconnection and all Ausgrid paperwork in-house.

Storm Damage We Repair Across Mortdale
The Mortdale storm damage we deal with most often:
- Branch strike on long private spans — heavy limbs across the run between the pole and a set-back house.
- Poles snapped at the ground line — rot below the surface finished off by wind and a loaded span.
- Leaning poles with failed stays — corroded stay wires that have parted, leaving the pole unsupported.
- Torn service cables and points of attachment — addressed with service cable replacement and a properly reinstated bracket.
- Damaged consumer mains — stretched or chafed runs needing consumer mains installation before power returns.
- Poles that pick up a defect notice — handled through defect notice rectification.
Insurance & What’s Usually Covered
What's typically NOT covered: wear-and-tear, gradual rot or rust, or failure caused by a pre-existing defect notice you hadn't rectified. Our written cause report helps insurers distinguish sudden events from gradual failure — and we handle insurance claims every week.
FAQs
Is the pole in my yard my responsibility?
If it stands on your land and carries the service line to your house, yes — it is a private pole and the owner maintains it. Ausgrid owns and maintains the numbered poles in the street. On a large Mortdale block there may be more than one pole between the street and the house, and we will identify exactly which are yours.
Straighten or replace — which will my pole need?
It depends on the condition of the shaft, especially below the ground line. A sound pole that has been pushed off plumb can be straightened and re-stayed as a genuine repair. A pole with rot at the base or a split shaft has to be replaced, and we will tell you that rather than dress up a temporary fix.

A limb is lying across our line. Can a tree contractor take it off?
Not while the line is live. Any branch touching a conductor can be energised, and tree contractors are not permitted to work on it in that state. Keep everyone 8 metres clear, report downed wires to Ausgrid on 13 13 88, and call us to isolate the supply so the branch can be removed safely.
Power is out but I cannot see any damage to the pole.
The fault is very often in the service cable, the point of attachment or the consumer mains instead. A cable pulled part-way from its bracket, or an old neutral that has failed under storm loading, will cut supply with the pole standing perfectly straight. We test the entire run from pole to switchboard to find it.
We have a defect notice on our pole. What does that mean?
It means the network has identified a fault and set a period for it to be fixed, with disconnection possible if it is not. As a Level 2 ASP we can rectify the defect and clear it with Ausgrid directly. Send us a photo of the notice and we will explain what the work involves.
