Service Cable Replacement

The cable from your private pole to your meter box is your responsibility — and when it fails, only a licensed Level 2 electrician can replace it. Sydney-wide service, network paperwork included.

Why your service cable is your responsibility

If you have a private power pole, the cable running from the top of that pole to your meter box belongs to you — not the network. It's called the consumer mains, and it's one of the most overlooked pieces of private electrical infrastructure in Sydney.

Service cables typically last 25–40 years, but UV exposure, tree rubbing, storm damage, and even cockatoos can shorten that. When it fails, it takes down your supply and sometimes causes damage to the pole-top hardware or your meter box.

Signs your service cable needs replacing

Visible sheath damage

Cracked, sun-bleached, or split outer insulation. Copper or internal insulation exposed anywhere along the length.

Low sag

Cable hanging lower than it used to, especially below 4.5 metres over a driveway or street.

Tree rubbing

Branch wearing against the cable over time. Eventually breaches the insulation and trips circuits.

Intermittent supply

Flickering lights, tripping safety switches, or brief brown-outs — often due to a failing cable or corroded connection.

When you might replace the cable

  • After storm damage — cable pulled, torn, or sliced by a falling branch
  • During a pole replacement — it's far cheaper to replace the cable at the same time
  • Supply upgrade — moving from single-phase to three-phase, or preparing for solar/EV charging
  • Visible degradation — sheath is sun-cracked, cable has stretched, fittings are corroded
  • Cockatoo or bird damage — yes, really, they chew cables in parts of Sydney
  • Network defect notice — Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy has flagged the cable as non-compliant

Our replacement process

  1. Site assessment. Inspect existing cable, fittings, pole-top connection, and meter box entry.
  2. Fixed-price quote. Cable supply, installation, network paperwork, and disposal of old cable.
  3. Network coordination. Planned outage scheduled with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy.
  4. Removal. Old cable disconnected at both ends, safely de-tensioned, and removed.
  5. New cable install. New cable pulled, tensioned, terminated at pole and meter box, hardware replaced where needed.
  6. Compliance. Certificate of compliance lodged with the network; re-energised and tested.
