Bushland gullies run between the streets and the park boundary is never far away, so the timber standing over private service lines is mature forest eucalypt — tall, heavy and prone to dropping limbs in exactly the wet, gusty conditions that a southerly brings. Nothing on a private span is built to take a branch of that size.
Ground conditions make it worse. The sandy soils over sandstone through Engadine hold a pole footing poorly once they are saturated, so a pole that has been perfectly stable for years can move in a single wet night. Add the long private runs typical of the area — houses set well back with the pole standing between the street and the front door — and there is a lot of leverage working on a footing that is losing its grip.
Many Engadine poles are also decades-old hardwood that has been through fire seasons. Scorching, internal checking and rot at the ground line all reduce the section that is actually carrying load. Engadine is on the Ausgrid network: Ausgrid maintains the numbered street poles, while the pole on your property is private and the owner's responsibility.

What Happens When Your Engadine Pole Comes Down
- Keep everyone at least 8 metres clear of any conductor on the ground and treat it as live — in dry bush a live wire is a fire risk too. Report it to Ausgrid on 13 13 88, then call us.
- Emergency make-safe. Our Level 2 crew isolates the supply, secures or removes the damaged pole and clears the hazard from the block.
- Assessment. We inspect the butt below ground line for rot and fire damage, and check cross arms, stays, service cable and the point of attachment.
- Repair or replacement. Where the timber is sound that can be straightening and re-staying; where it is not, a full private power pole installation in timber or composite.
- Reconnection. We handle the disconnection, reconnection and Ausgrid network notification in-house.

How often should a bushland pole be inspected?
More often than a suburban one. Fire exposure, termites and constant limb contact all shorten a pole's life, and the damage that matters is below ground where you cannot see it. Having the pole and the full private run checked periodically — and after any serious storm or fire — is sensible on a bush-edge block.
Is a composite pole better here than timber?
In fire-exposed bushland, generally yes. Composite poles do not rot, are not attacked by termites and hold up far better around fire than hardwood. They cost more initially but avoid the ground-line failures that put most Engadine timber poles on the ground. We install both and will compare them for your site.
Do you handle the reconnection with Ausgrid?
Yes. As a Level 2 ASP accredited contractor we do the disconnection and reconnection ourselves and lodge the network notification with Ausgrid in-house. You do not have to book anything separately or wait on the network to send someone before your power comes back on.
