Gymea's older streets fall away towards Gymea Bay and Port Hacking, and the combination of slope, heavy tree cover and long private service runs makes it hard on power poles when a southerly comes through. High Demand Electrical is a Level 2 ASP accredited contractor (Licence 397193C) repairing and replacing storm-damaged private poles across Gymea and reconnecting supply to the Ausgrid network.

Storm Damage Power Pole Repair in Gymea
When a private pole leans or comes down, everything attached to it is under strain — the service cable, the point of attachment on your house and the consumer mains running to the meter box. It is not something to leave standing crooked until the weather clears.
We cover Gymea, Gymea Bay, Miranda, Kirrawee, Sutherland and Grays Point with 24/7 emergency power pole service, on-site make-safe for fallen poles, and same-day repair or replacement wherever we can get plant onto the block.
How Urgent Is Your Storm-Damaged Pole?
Why Gymea Private Poles Fail in Storms
The land through Gymea drops steadily towards the bay, and the older parts of the suburb were built on sloping blocks with the house set back and down from the street. That gives you long, steep private spans and, in plenty of cases, a private pole standing in a back or side yard well away from the road. Wind loading on a long span is unforgiving, and the same slope that made the block attractive makes the ground shed water into the pole footing.
Tree cover adds the rest. The established gardens and remnant gums through Gymea and Gymea Bay are tall enough to sit directly above service lines, so a storm that brings limbs down brings poles and cross arms with them. Where the pole is an original hardwood, decades of ground contact will already have hollowed the butt out below the surface.
Gymea is supplied by Ausgrid. Ausgrid maintains the numbered poles in the street; the pole standing on your land that carries your service line is a private pole and the owner's responsibility. Where access is tight we still get plant in — and where we cannot, we work it by hand.
Choose Your Situation — See What We Do
What Happens When Your Gymea Pole Comes Down
- Keep everyone at least 8 metres clear of a fallen conductor, treat it as live, and report it to Ausgrid on 13 13 88 before calling us to attend.
- Emergency make-safe. Our crew isolates supply, secures or removes the pole and clears the hazard, including from steep or landscaped yards where the pole has fallen into the block.
- Assessment. We check the butt below ground line, the stays, cross arms, service cable and point of attachment and tell you what is salvageable.
- Repair or replacement. That could be straightening and new stays, a cross arm replacement, or an emergency pole replacement.
- Reconnection. Disconnection, reconnection and the Ausgrid network notification are all done in-house by us.

Storm Damage We Repair Across Gymea
Typical storm damage on Gymea blocks includes:
- Poles leaning downhill — slope plus saturated ground letting a pole rotate out of plumb.
- Snapped butts — rotted hardwood failing at ground line under gust load.
- Limbs across spans — mature trees dropping branches onto long private service lines.
- Failed stays — corroded or pulled stay wires that were holding a marginal pole upright.
- Torn service cable — long spans stretched past their limit, needing full cable replacement.
- Meter box and mains damage — impact or pull-through damage repaired under our pole repair services.
Insurance & What’s Usually Covered
What's typically NOT covered: wear-and-tear, gradual rot or rust, or failure caused by a pre-existing defect notice you hadn't rectified. Our written cause report helps insurers distinguish sudden events from gradual failure — and we handle insurance claims every week.
FAQs
My private pole is on a steep block. Can you still get to it?
Almost always. A lot of Gymea and Gymea Bay poles sit down the slope or well back from the street, so access planning is part of every quote. Where an elevated work platform cannot reach, we work the pole with rigging and hand plant instead. We will tell you upfront what the site needs.
Whose pole is it if it stands between two properties?
If it is not a numbered Ausgrid street pole, it is private, and responsibility follows the land it stands on and the properties it supplies. Shared private poles are common on older Shire blocks, and owners generally share the cost. We provide a condition report that sets out exactly what the pole serves.

Can a leaning pole just be straightened?
Sometimes. If the timber below the ground line is sound and the pole has simply moved in soft ground, straightening and re-staying is a proper fix. If the butt is rotted, split or fire-damaged, straightening it just resets a pole that will fail again. We check the butt before recommending either.
Is it worth going underground instead of replacing the pole?
On heavily treed blocks it can be. An overhead to underground conversion removes the pole and the overhead span, which removes the storm and branch-strike risk permanently. It costs more than a replacement and depends on trenching access and the Ausgrid point of supply, so we assess it site by site.
What if I have already been sent a defect notice?
A defect notice from Ausgrid has a deadline attached, and storm damage often triggers one. We handle defect notice rectification as a Level 2 contractor, carry out the required work and clear the notice with the network directly so it does not escalate to a disconnection.
