Can My Private Power Pole Handle Three-Phase? Upgrade Guide for Sydney Pole-Fed Homes

Can you run three-phase power to a home fed from a private power pole? Yes, but the pole has to be part of the plan. Three-phase means more conductors on the service line, heavier consumer mains and different hardware at the point of attachment. On an older timber or steel pole, that can mean the pole itself needs replacing or reinforcing. Pole-fed homes in Sydney's north, Hills District, Sutherland Shire and western suburbs are exactly the properties now adding 22kW EV chargers, big batteries, ducted air-con and workshops. That's what pushes a single-phase supply past its limit.

Why homeowners are going three-phase

• Fast EV charging. A 22kW charger needs three-phase. Single-phase tops out around 7kW.
• Big batteries and larger solar systems. Three-phase can allow higher export limits and bigger inverters, depending on network rules.
• Ducted air-conditioning and heat pumps. Large units often need or run better on three-phase.
• Workshops, sheds and pool equipment. Welders, compressors and machinery on acreage properties are common on pole-fed land.
• Granny flats and extensions. Adding a second dwelling can push total demand past single-phase limits.

What changes on a pole-fed property

1. The service line

The overhead cable from the network pole to your private pole is replaced with a three-phase service line. That's more conductors, and often a heavier aerial bundled cable, which puts more tension on your pole.

2. The private pole

Extra conductors and tension mean the pole must be structurally sound and adequately sized. We check for rot at ground line, rust in steel poles, lean, footing condition and whether it needs a stay or strut. A pole that's fine for a single-phase service can be marginal for three-phase. 3. Point of attachment and consumer mains

The point of attachment hardware is upgraded for the new service, and the consumer mains are replaced with correctly sized three-phase cable to your meter. See our consumer mains upgrade guide for more on this part of the job.

4. Metering and switchboard

You'll need three-phase metering and a switchboard with a three-phase main switch and properly balanced circuits. This is usually done in the same outage.

The approval process

1. Load assessment. We calculate your maximum demand now and after the planned additions.
2. Application to the distributor. We apply to Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy for the supply increase. They check whether the local network has capacity.
3. Network response. Most approvals are straightforward. Occasionally the network needs augmentation, such as transformer or line upgrades, which can add cost and time on the network side.
4. Scheduling. Once approved, we book the outage and coordinate the metering provider.

What drives the cost

As a market guide, published Sydney pricing puts three-phase upgrades at roughly $6,500 to $12,000 depending on cable run and service line work. On a pole-fed home, the biggest variables are:

• Whether the pole can stay. A pole replacement or composite pole upgrade adds significantly but may be due anyway.
• Service line span from the network pole to your private pole
• Consumer mains run length to the meter and switchboard
• Switchboard condition, and whether a full board replacement is needed
• Network augmentation, if the distributor requires it

Three-phase or underground?

If your pole is near end of life and you're going three-phase anyway, it's worth pricing an overhead to underground conversion at the same time. You'd be installing new three-phase mains either way. Going underground removes the pole, avoids future pole replacements and takes storm and tree risk off the table. It usually costs more upfront because of trenching.
