Whose Pole Is That? How to Tell a Private Power Pole From a Network Pole in 30 Seconds

How do you tell whether a power pole is yours or the network's? Check three things: where the pole stands, what it feeds, and what markings it carries. A pole inside your property boundary that feeds only your home is almost certainly a private power pole, which means maintaining it is your responsibility. A pole on the footpath or verge carrying wires to several houses belongs to Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy.

1. Check where it stands

This settles most cases on its own. Distributors run their poles along road reserves, footpaths and verges. If the pole is standing inside your fence line, in the garden, beside the driveway or partway up an acreage block, it is almost certainly private. The network built its line to the street; someone later paid for that pole to get power the rest of the way in. 2. Check what it feeds

Follow the wires. A network pole carries the street mains, usually serving several houses, and often a street light or larger equipment like a pole-top transformer — this is overhead service mains infrastructure owned and maintained by the distributor. A private pole typically carries a single service line heading to one house, garage or shed. On battleaxe blocks and shared driveways, one private pole can serve a small group of neighbours, and in that case the responsibility is shared between them.

3. Look for the markings

Network poles generally carry the distributor's identification markings, such as a pole number plate, so crews can find them. Private poles usually carry no distributor ID. Some carry an installer's tag or an inspection sticker instead, which is itself a strong clue that a private owner has been maintaining it. Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy also fit reflective markers and asset tags to their own poles for maintenance scheduling and fault crews, so an unmarked pole standing off the street alignment is a strong sign it is privately owned. If you genuinely cannot tell, do not guess: a licensed electrician or the distributor can confirm ownership before you arrange any work.

4. Follow the line from the street
