Possum Guards for Power Poles in Sydney: Signs, Fixes and Installation

Possum Guards for Power Poles in Sydney: Signs, Fixes and Installation

Does your private power pole need a possum guard? If possums are using your pole, service line or the trees beside it to reach your roof, yes, a possum guard is usually the simplest fix, and it has to be fitted by a licensed Level 2 ASP electrician because the line and pole are live. Left alone, a possum on your pole can chew insulation, nest in the roof space or trigger a network defect notice on the pole itself.

⚡ Quick Answers: Possum Guards for Power Poles

  • Do possum guards actually work? Yes, a correctly fitted guard is a humane physical barrier the possum cannot climb past, not a smell or noise it eventually ignores.
  • Can I fit one myself? No. The pole and service line are live, so installation is Level 2 ASP work, the same category as pole and consumer mains repairs.
  • Will it hurt the possum? No. The guard spins or rotates so the animal loses grip and climbs back down unharmed. Possums are a protected native species in NSW.
  • How do I know a possum is the problem? Scratch marks on the pole, droppings at the base, chewed insulation, roof noise near the service line entry, or a fault that keeps coming back with no clear cause.
  • Can possum damage turn into a defect notice? Yes. A network inspection that finds chewed insulation or damaged timber on your private pole can issue a defect notice you then have to clear on the network's timeline.
  • Does a guard stop every possum? Only if there is no other way up. A branch, fence or roofline touching the pole or line gives a bypass, so a proper install checks for those too.

How possums damage poles and service lines

Possums are not out to wreck your electrics. They climb because the pole is the easiest way up, and the damage comes from the climbing, chewing and nesting that follow.

Chewed service lines. Gnawing through insulation exposes the conductor. That can trip your supply, cause intermittent faults or leave a live hazard hanging over a driveway or garden.

Access to roofs and meter boxes. A service line often runs straight to the house, so a possum that follows it can end up on the roof, in the roof space or inside a meter box.

Damage to the timber. Claw marks and gnawing open up the pole surface. Moisture gets in, and that adds to rot over time, which shortens the life of a pole you may already be watching.

Defect notices. Network inspections, including those by Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, can flag damaged poles and lines. Possum damage left alone can turn into a defect notice that you have to fix on the network's timeline, not yours. See our defect notice rectification guide if yours has already arrived.

The cheapest time to deal with all of this is before the chewing starts.

What is a possum guard for a power pole?

A possum guard is a barrier fitted to your power pole or service line that a possum cannot climb past. The animal loses its grip and drops back down without being hurt.

There are two main types, and many jobs use both:

  • Swivelling pole sleeve. Fitted above reach height on the pole. It spins when a possum tries to grip it, so there is nothing to climb.
  • Spinning roller barriers. Fitted along the service line where it leaves the pole or approaches the house, so a possum cannot walk the line to your roof or meter box.

Our guards are UV stabilised plastic, built to handle Sydney sun, wind and rain without cracking or seizing. There are no traps, poisons or spikes. Possums are protected native animals in NSW, so the aim is to keep them off your electrical supply, not to harm them.

One honest limit: a guard only works if there is no other way up. A branch, fence or roof edge that touches the pole or line gives the possum a bypass, so a good install also deals with those.

Signs possums are damaging your power pole

You do not need to see a possum to know one is using your pole. Look for:

  • Scratch marks on the pole
  • Droppings at the base
  • Chewed or stripped insulation on the service line
  • Scratching or thumping in the roof near where the line comes in
  • A fault or trip that keeps coming back with no clear cause

If you notice chewed cable or a leaning or damaged pole, treat it as a safety issue. Stay well clear of anything that has come down and call us on 0402 559 777 or see our 24/7 emergency power pole service. A routine private power pole inspection will also pick up early possum damage before it becomes a defect notice.

Who is responsible for the pole?

A private power pole, the one that carries power from the network to your property, is normally the owner's responsibility to maintain, which is covered in full in our guide to private power pole ownership and rules. That is why possum damage and defect notices land on the property owner. Our guides on who maintains a private power pole and who is responsible for the service cable from pole to house explain this in more detail. If you are unsure whether a pole is yours or the network's, ask before you do anything, and do not climb or touch it yourself.

How possum guard installation works

A possum guard install is a short job when it is done by someone who understands the network, not only the animal. Here is how a typical visit runs:

  1. Site check. We look at the pole, service line, nearby trees, roofs and fences to see how possums are getting up.
  2. Pole sleeve. A swivelling sleeve goes on above reach height.
  3. Line barriers. Spinning roller barriers go on the service line where needed.
  4. Inspection. We check the timber, fittings, insulation and attachment point for existing damage.
  5. Repairs. Possum damage can be repaired in the same visit by our Level 2 ASP team.
  6. Tree and branch advice. If a branch is giving possums a bypass, we tell you what to trim. Where a line has to be safely disconnected for an arborist, we can arrange that.
  7. Follow up. If possums still get through, we check and adjust.

Why it's Level 2 ASP work

Work on a service line and a private pole is regulated electrical work. High Demand Power Poles is a licensed Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (Licence 397193C), so the install, any repairs and the network paperwork come from one team. That matters if your pole has already been flagged on an inspection.

We do not list fixed prices because every pole is different. Request a free possum guard quote and we will explain what is included after the site check.

How High Demand Electrical helps

High Demand Power Poles is one of Sydney's most trusted Level 2 ASPs for the overhead work a possum guard install actually involves, not a pest control company subcontracting the electrical part out. Our licensed field technicians carry possum guard kits on the truck, so in many cases the site check and the install happen in the same visit rather than a second appointment weeks later.

We install across Greater Sydney, servicing homes and businesses in the Sydney CBD, Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, Northern Beaches, North Shore, Parramatta, The Hills, Western Sydney, South West Sydney and the Sutherland Shire. If your property is fed from a rear lane pole, the kind common on older Inner West terraces, our sister site has more on private power poles and rear lane reticulation in the Inner West. If your supply comes from a street pole rather than your own private pole, our main site covers the general version of this problem in possum guards for power lines and possum deterrents that actually work.

Use the suburb checker on our Possum Guard Installation page to see if we cover you, or call us if your suburb is not listed. We may still be able to help.

Possum Guard FAQs (Sydney)

Do possum guards hurt possums?

No. The guard rotates so the possum cannot grip. It drops back down and moves on. There are no traps, poisons or spikes.

Can chewed cables be repaired?

Yes. We can repair possum damage in the same visit and handle the network paperwork. See power pole installation if the damage means a section needs replacing.

How do I know a possum is the problem?

Look for scratch marks on the pole, droppings at the base, chewed insulation, noise in the roof near the service line, or a fault that keeps returning.

Will a guard stop every possum?

Only if there is no other way up. We check nearby branches, fences and roof edges, and we come back and adjust if possums still get through.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the pole, the service line and any repairs needed. Request a free quote and we will explain what is included after the site check.
