How Long Does a Private Power Pole Installation Take in Sydney?

If you've just been told you need a private power pole replaced, one of your first thoughts is probably, how long will I be without power? The good news is that standard residential pole jobs are usually a one-day affair. The less good news is that getting to install day can take two to six weeks, depending on your situation. Here's the realistic timeline.

Step 1: Initial enquiry & site visit (Day 0–3)

You call a Level 2 electrician. We come out, walk the site, check the existing pole, take photos, measure spans, look at access, and ask questions like: do you have three-phase? Is there a solar system? Is the meter on the pole?

For most residential jobs in Sydney, this visit happens within one to three business days. For urgent work (leaning pole, network defect notice, after-storm) we can usually be onsite the same or next day.

Step 2: Written quote (Day 3–5)

You'll receive a fixed-price quote by email, typically within 48 hours of the site visit. It should list exactly what's included, the pole material, any network fees, and an estimated installation window.

Step 3: Network approval & scheduling (Day 5–21)

This is where most of the wait happens. Once you accept the quote, we lodge paperwork with your distribution network — Ausgrid in most of metro Sydney, Endeavour Energy in the western and south-western suburbs.

Typical network approval times in 2026:

  • Ausgrid: 5 – 15 business days
  • Endeavour Energy: 7 – 20 business days
  • Urgent / safety jobs: often fast-tracked in 1 – 5 days

During this window we also coordinate the pole supplier, book a crane or auger if needed, and confirm a planned outage time with you.

Step 4: Planned power outage & install day (Day X, 6–10 hours)

This is the day the work actually happens. Here's what a standard job looks like:

  1. 7:30 AM – Crew arrives, sets up safety zone, confirms outage with the network.
  2. 8:00 AM – Power is disconnected at the network point.
  3. 8:00 – 10:00 AM – Old pole is removed (often cut in sections), existing service line is disconnected.
  4. 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM – New hole is dug or existing hole is prepared. Concrete is poured if required.
  5. 12:00 – 2:00 PM – New pole is lifted into position (crane or pole-lifter) and braced while concrete sets.
  6. 2:00 – 4:00 PM – New service cable is run, hardware installed, meter/service connected.
  7. 4:00 PM – Network crew re-energises. Power back on. Testing & paperwork.

For straightforward jobs you're looking at 6 to 8 hours without power. Larger or trickier jobs can run to 10 hours or occasionally spill into a second morning.

Step 5: Final inspection & compliance (Day X – Day X+7)

Your Level 2 electrician lodges the Certificate of Compliance (CCEW) with the network. You should get a copy by email within a few days. Keep it — you'll need it if you sell the property or make an insurance claim.

What can cause delays?

  • Network backlog. Summer storms across Sydney often blow out approval times.
  • Easement or access issues. Poles near shared driveways, flag lots, or heritage zones can need extra paperwork.
  • Asbestos in the existing service line. Older properties sometimes have fibre-insulated cables that need specialist handling.
  • Weather. Crane work gets postponed in high wind or heavy rain.
  • Solar interconnection. If you have rooftop solar, we need to coordinate inverter isolation and re-commissioning.

How to make it faster

  • Act early if your pole is leaning, cracked, or has soft timber — don't wait for a defect notice.
  • Have a recent electricity bill handy (we need your NMI number).
  • If you share a boundary pole with a neighbour, let them know and get their input before quoting.
  • Choose a Level 2 electrician who handles Ausgrid/Endeavour paperwork in-house — it shaves days off.

Emergency pole jobs

If your pole has fallen or is on the verge of falling, the timeline collapses dramatically. We can usually be onsite within hours, make it safe, and lodge a fast-track replacement with the network. In genuine emergencies the full cycle can be done in 24 – 72 hours.

Planning ahead?

If your pole looks tired but isn't critical yet, booking it in now (rather than waiting for storm season) gives you the best timeline, the best price, and the most choice of pole material. Book a free site visit →
