Emergency Private Power Pole Installation in Sydney: When You Need It Fast
A fallen or failing private power pole is one of the most stressful things that can happen to a Sydney homeowner. You've lost power, there are live wires somewhere you can't see, and you don't know who to call first. This guide walks you through exactly what to do — and what a Level 2 electrician can realistically do on the same day.
First: make sure everyone is safe
Before you do anything else:
- Stay at least 10 metres away from the pole and any fallen wires. Always assume wires are live.
- Keep children and pets inside. Wires can energise fences, puddles, even wet grass.
- If you see sparking, smoke, or fire: call 000 first.
Next: call the right people in the right order
- Your network provider — Ausgrid (13 13 88) or Endeavour Energy (13 10 03). They'll isolate the street-side supply so the wires are safe. This is free and usually happens within a couple of hours.
- A Level 2 electrician — that's us. We handle the pole itself, the service line, and all the paperwork to get your power back on legally and safely.
- Your home insurer — most storm/impact damage to private poles is covered under home building insurance. Call them to open a claim while the pole is still down. Take photos.
What a Level 2 electrician can do today
When we arrive on an emergency call, depending on the situation we can usually do some or all of the following on the same day:
- Make safe. Secure the area, cut back damaged cable, isolate damaged circuits at the switchboard.
- Temporary supply. In some cases we can rig a temporary supply from an adjacent safe point so essential circuits (fridge, CPAP, medical) stay powered.
- Lodge an urgent network request. We notify Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy directly and request a fast-track pole replacement permit.
- Full replacement. If the damage is straightforward and we can get a pole on site, we can sometimes complete a full replacement within 24–72 hours.
What the network covers vs what you cover
This is where a lot of homeowners get confused. The simple rule:
- Network wires (street side of your property boundary): Ausgrid/Endeavour's problem. Free.
- Private pole on your property + service line up to the house: Your problem. You pay, usually via your insurer.
If the pole is on your side of the boundary, even if a network-side tree fell on it, it's still your pole to replace. You may be able to claim against the tree owner or the network in some cases — speak to your insurer.
Typical emergency timeline
- 0 – 2 hours: Network isolates street supply. You and your family are safe.
- 2 – 6 hours: Level 2 electrician on site, makes safe, documents damage, starts paperwork.
- 6 – 48 hours: Pole ordered, network permit lodged on urgent basis, install scheduled.
- 24 – 72 hours: Replacement pole installed, new service line run, network re-energises.
Genuinely urgent jobs (fallen pole, live wires, no supply to the property) are almost always resolved within 3 days. Severe-storm weeks can push this out a bit when the whole network is stretched.
What does an emergency pole job cost?
Emergency replacements cost 30–60% more than scheduled work. A standard single-phase emergency replacement in Sydney in 2026 typically runs $5,500 – $9,500. If it's insurance-covered, you'll usually pay only your excess.
Can you prevent emergencies?
Most "emergencies" we respond to were visible problems 6–24 months earlier — a lean that got worse, rot at the base, a cracked cross-arm. A five-minute annual inspection (here's our homeowner checklist) catches almost all of them. A 30-minute professional inspection catches the rest.
